I think even if you're learning Japanese, if you're not in Japan you shouldn't have an issue where you start mispronouncing r as l and vice versa, but over the past few years there's been time I said frag instead of flag or plinter instead of printer. And just now, instead of Harry, I said Ha(r)ly...
Though I did have speech problems when I was a kid, I never struggled with my l's or r's... but it seems like my brain gets confused now. I just hope if I'm ever around a Japanese person? and we're speaking English, of course? They don't think it's something I'm doing on purpose.
